Meet an expert // Alan Ling

Australia accounts for only 0.3% of the world’s population, so it’s not surprising that many businesses in Australia are embracing the opportunity to engage with offshore markets.

As Chairman of Bentleys’ International Advisory specialisation, Alan Ling works with a broad range of businesses to facilitate their offshore expansion, particularly to China.

“The China market is complex, often challenging, and has the potential to be very lucrative if you understand it and establish the supporting networks to enable success,” Alan said.

“Market opportunity can be significant for Australian businesses of all sizes seeking to export their products and services to China,” he said.

As Australia’s largest trading partner in terms of both exports and imports, China accounts for over $194 million in annual Australian trade, and, according to a recent study by the China Commerce Ministry, Chinese demand for foreign goods is expected to increase over the coming years.

“Last week, I worked with an Australian fishing company which has set up in China, but his business has been slow to really take off. I introduced him to some of my China-based contacts, and already there are positive signs to suggest a lucrative future ahead,” Alan said.
