Hugh has practised in both accounting and legal firms during the last 25 years and has been a Partner at Bentleys since 2012. The ability to combine a chartered accounting qualification with a legal background has provided a unique foundation for working across a broad range of industries. Leading teams and working with clients to provide time effective solutions to complex matters has been a key focus.

Hugh has been personally appointed to formal corporate insolvency engagements, being Receiverships, Liquidations, Voluntary Administrations, Deeds of Company Arrangement and a Scheme of Arrangement. He has also conducted Investigative Accountants Reports and Expert Reports across various industries and has undertaken advisory roles.

Hugh has also led multi-disciplined teams (e.g. Tax, Audit, Financial Services, Consultants/Experts, Legal) across local and multiple international jurisdictions.

Various Projects
  • Personally appointed to various companies/businesses by secured creditors and directors. Hugh’s role in these engagements has included:
  • Monitoring, reviewing and determining business strategies, asset sales, assessing project completion and trading options, including the continuing trading of businesses.
  • Streamlining/restructuring business operations and personnel/resources to meet financial metrics/capacities. (eg industries: property, building & construction, insurance/reinsurance, childcare, retail, financial services, agriculture.)
  • Greyhound Racing NSW: Advisor to the Greyhound Racing Administrator/GRNSW. This role provides a unique insight into the financial and operational workings of the industry.
  • Voluntary Administrator/Liquidator of a consumer based short term lending business operating 63 stores nationally. After trading the business for a period, Hugh led successful negotiation of a licence agreement of the company’s footprint which maximised the future employment opportunities for staff, the continued collection of the loan book and reduced trading creditor claims.
  • Financial review for a major Australian bank of an aged care operator with multiple sites across New South Wales.  Bank facilities c.$50m.
  • Scheme Administrator and Engagement Leader on Liquidation of an International Reinsurance Company listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.
  • Recoveries in excess of $200m achieved through claims management and litigation across various jurisdictions including Australia, US, UK, Asia and Bermuda.
  • Member of advisory teams to the New South Wales and Queensland governments.
  • Government engagements including distress advice, supplier reviews and corporate governance issues.
  • Restructure/streamlining of a large multi-national corporation listed on the Australian Stock Exchange with an anticipated removal of approximately 100 companies from its corporate restructure.
  • Extensive litigation management of complex legal matters in all Australian Courts including the Australian High Court and also the High Court, Court of Appeal & Supreme Courts of England and Wales. Individual disputes range to c.$100m.
  • Administering Brookfield Multiplex Enforceable Undertaking.
  • Developing and implementing claims management systems and adjudication processes in order to give effect to the distribution of funds, c.$30 million. Also engaged by Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC) to report on the company’s compliance with the undertaking.
  • Class action advisory accounting role for major Australian companies.
